IMPORTANT: A change related to social events has occured. The Solidarity museum, which was previously the place to visit on Wednesday evening (September 27th), is currenly closed due to moving to another location. In this situation, we had to change plans and arranged a visit to the Museum of Amber. We are sure it will be as attractive as the original option. Also, the timing of the guided tour to Gdansk Old Town has changed - the guided tour will be associated with the visit to the Museum of Amber, not with the walk to the Conference Dinner as previously published.

Apart from the scientific sessions, SAFECOMP 2006 offers to its participants a number of social events. Also, a meeting of the EWICS Technical Committee 7 and a meeting of RESIST project will be held as a related event to the conference.

Conference welcome reception will take place on Tuesday, September 26th and it is supposed to familiarise participants of SAFECOMP 2006. The welcome reception will take place in Holiday Inn (conference venue hotel).

For the evening on Wednesday, September 27th a visit to the Museum of Amber is arranged. The museum is located in the Old Town Barbican and presents raw amber with inclusions, amber jewellery and examples of unique amber craftsmanship.

The amber is viewed in different aspects: geological, physical, chemical and biological over the whole time of its evolution and use. The multimedia exposition explains amber excavation, its trading routes as well as the scientific, artistic, medical and magical use of amber. The exposition occupies all floors of the Barbican Prison Tower.

The visit to the museum will be accompanied with a guided tour around the Gdansk Old Town.

SAFECOMP 2006 Conference Dinner is planned for Thursday evening (September 28th). The dinner will take place inside the Artus Court of Gdansk.

This is probably the most representative room in Gdansk Old Town. The Artus Court was built in 15th century for the purpose of meetings of rich Gdansk patricians who wished to refer to the tradition of King Athur's Knights. The gothic-style Artus Court is decorated with numerous paintings, sculptures, armours and ship models. Many times, this room has guested kings and princes welcomed by Gdansk authorities and is still used for receptions and banquets when heads of states visit Gdansk.

SAFECOMP 2006 Conference Dinner is planned as a served dinner and will be accompanied with live music.

EWICS TC7 meeting and RESIST project meeting preliminary agenda assume a two-day event on September 25th and 26th (Monday and Tuesday). The venue of the meeting will be the building of the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics located within the campus of the Gdansk University of Technology (15 minutes by tram from the Holiday Inn Hotel).

Detailed agenda of EWICS meeting is available at EWICS pages.

Reaching the Gdansk University of Technology campus

The meetings preceding SAFECOMP 2006 conference will be held in the building of the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics of the Gdansk University of Technology. The EWICS meeting will take place in Faculty's Auditorium #1, while RESIST project meeting is scheduled in Auditorium #2. The address of the Gdansk University of Technology (GUT) campus is:

ul. Narutowicza 11/12
80-952 Gdansk - Wrzeszcz

The GUT campus can be reached by taxi or by tram.

Taxi: A taxi will take you directly in front of the Main Building if you give the driver a proper address: Narutowicza 11/12 and perhaps mention GUT ("Politechnika" in Polish). You can also point directly the building you want to reach ("Wydzial Elektroniki" in Polish).

It is recommended to use services of registered taxi companies. If you travel from the hotel, please ask hotel reception to call a taxi for you. If you travel from the airport, please note that only one taxi company has an official contract for handling passengers travelling from the airport, you can distinguish their taxis by the designation 9686 clearly put on top of the car.

The fare for a ride should be about:

  • From the city centre: 15 PLN (approx. 4 Euro)
  • From the airport: 40 PLN (approx. 10 Euro)
Important: Remember to demand the receipt from the driver!

Tram: To reach GUT from the city centre you can also take a tram. If that is your choice, you should take the line 6, 11 or 12 to the direction to Wrzeszcz district. If you are staying in Holiday Inn hotel or Mercure Hevelius hotel, the closest tram stop is near the bus station ("Dworzec PKS" in Polish). This stop can be reached from mentioned hotels via the underground passage, please follow it until you take a lift by moving stairs and then turn right and backwards). After boarding a tram, you should get off at the stop "Politechnika". From that point the GUT ETI Building is just about 10 minutes walk along the Narutowicza, Bracka and Siedlicka street - see the map below.

The price of the ticket varies depending on the time of the tram ride: 1.40 PLN for 10 minutes and 2.80 PLN for 30 minutes. Tram drivers sell packs of three 1.40 PLN tickets, but you can also purchase individual tickets at most of the newstands in Gdansk (ticket is "bilet" in Polish). Passengers should punch their tickets immediately after boarding a tram. Trams usually go every 10 to 15 minutes.

The main entrance of the Faculty looks like this:

To reach Auditorium #1 or Auditorium #2, please just proceed onward after you enter the building through the main entrance and follow the signs.
